Monal Restaurant was built on Pak Army land
Military authorities have demanded the land of the Monal Restaurant located in Margalla National Park. CDA Member Claims in Parliamentary Committee
Islamabad (November 14, 2019) Dr. Shahid Mahmood, a member of the Federal Development Agency CDA, told the Parliamentary Committee on Wednesday that the Monal Restaurant located in the Margalla hills of Islamabad was built on military land, while military officials now have the land. According to media reports, he told the National Assembly’s Steering Committee for Climate Change that fifteen years ago, the CDA did not know that the land on which the monal restaurant was being built is owned by the Pak army. ۔
The committee was further informed that the 22,000 acres of land originally owned by Margalla National Park was owned by the Punjab Government, while the army was allotted 5,500 acres in Margalla National Park.
Dr Shahid Mahmood told the committee that the land was not allotted to the Pakistan Army for the year. The CDA now has 16,500 acres of land. The most recent survey conducted by the government. The Monal Restaurant was built in 2005 and is owned by the CDA. Dr. Shahid Mahmood told the Committee that the Monal Restaurant was leased for a period of 10 years. CDA officials also told the Committee The place is now being evacuated and handed over to the army. The chairman of the committee, Manza Hassan, also inquired how the land was allotted to a restaurant in Margalla National Park and who was responsible for it.
Dr Shahid Mahmood said that at that time CDA Gurdwara had given permission to construct the restaurant. The committee was also informed about the decision of the board. He said that several officers were inquired for permission to construct the restaurant. However, none was successful. The chairman of the committee has sought details on building a restaurant on CDA-protected land. Joint Secretary for Climate Change Suleiman Worachich has told the committee that the state has land limits. Due to confusion, the government is unable to enforce environmental protection laws, he said, adding that in the 1960s Margalla National Park was last mapped.
